Every generation faces a moment when democratic institutions wobble, when voices of intolerance grow louder, and when people wonder if the system can hold.</p><p>America has seen it before&#8212;whether in the Red Scares, the backlash to Civil Rights, or even in the darkest chapters abroad. Each time, the same pattern: authoritarianism whispers first, then shouts. And each time, people rose up and said: <em>not here, not now, not us.</em></p><p>This summer, right here in Pima County, children were forced to represent themselves in immigration court. Children&#8212;alone, before the power of the state. As reported in the Copper Courier and elsewhere -&#8221;Lucy, <strong>a 3-year-old girl </strong>wearing a purple dress and beaded bracelets, was called to the front of the courthouse by the judge. <strong>She spoke limited English and did not have legal representation.</strong>&#8221; It is happening AGAIN, and in our own backyard. If history warns us of anything, it is this: when we allow the most vulnerable to be treated as less than human, the whole fabric of democracy begins to fray.</p><p>Arizona is at its own inflection point. Some leaders tell us to look the other way as schools are defunded, as elections are undermined, as courts are twisted into cruelty. But we know better.</p><p>This is where Pima stands tall.
